We’re still firming up the date and bands for our next Big Thaw concert.
So far, what we know is that it will be in March and that we’d like to have some fresh faces and sounds for our paying audience. That said, we’re putting it to you, the BBMA members, to tell us: Which bands should we invite this year?
Please keep in mind that our budgets simply aren’t ample enough to make a trip to southeast Wisconsin in early spring worthwhile for a touring act. But there are any number of bands in the state who might consider making the trip for the modest amounts we can pay.
We pride ourselves on knowing a lot of these bands. But we don’t claim to know them all.
So, if you are aware of any groups that may not have come to our attention for whatever reason, or in a band yourself that’s looking for opportunities to play, please send your suggestions to: badgerlandbluegrass@gmail.com.
Of course, we on the board still have to make the ultimate decision on who to bill. We’ll be taking into consideration not only budgetary constraints but also our desire to present bands demonstrating the variety of styles and makeups that all go under the bluegrass name in Wisconsin.

Rain held off for Bluegrass at the Village
The morning of Sunday, August 9th started out cloudy and rainy. This gave many people flashback memories to the “historic flooding” of 2025…which turned out to be the weekend this event was held last year. Could it be that this much-anticipated, enjoyable bluegrass event would once again turn into another stormy nightmare? Well, as the day advanced, the clouds cleared, the sun shined brightly, and a marvelous time was had by those who joined in this year’s music and fun!
Held at Ozaukee County Pioneer Village for 20 years now, “Bluegrass at the VIllage” has become a favorite annual event for many. Serving as a major fund-raiser for the Ozaukee County Historical Society, the day included a fine variety of amazing bluegrass bands, food, a raffle, workshops, crafts for children and opportunities to participate in jam sessions.
The incredible line-up of bands this year included: Sawdust Symphony, Valley Fox, Aidan Muse, Cerny & Ogburn and Fox Crossing String Band. Each group dazzled the audience with their skillful musicianship, extraordinary vocal harmonies, and overall passionate, energetic performances.
Of particular interest to this year’s eager listeners was the young, up and coming Aiden Muse. Having begun playing banjo when he was 8 years old, Aiden (currently 14 years old) has already performed at major competitions and festivals, winning awards and gaining much recognition for his musical talents. An important dimension of Aiden’s original music compositions is his dedication to advocacy and community. During his performance at “Bluegrass at the Village,” Aiden described how he composed several tunes specifically to bring attention and support to local Wisconsin non-profit agricultural organizations that assist farmers in crisis. And his music did not disappoint! When Aiden played his songs, it was clear that the audience both respected his lyrical messages and greatly enjoyed his musical talent!
When asked if Aiden Muse had any recommendations for new musicians hoping to further expand their talents he said: “If you love playing music, go for it! Learn the basics, practice, and keep going!”
Overall, this year’s “Bluegrass at the Village” was a wonderful success! It could not have been made possible without the dedicated help of many volunteers and sponsors. While the program for the day’s event listed dozens of individuals and organizations, one particular person deserves special recognition: Mary Ann Velnetske, 2026 Coordinator. With making arrangements for the bands, food, raffles sponsors, radio ads, and more….Mary Ann’s behind-the-scenes time and efforts truly came together in an event enjoyed by all!
